FAQ

What must I bring along for hospitalization?

The list of items to be brought for hospitalization at BGS Gleneagles Global Hospitals includes – health insurance card, medical records (current & previous), investigation reports and consultation/prescriptions from the OPD. Additionally, patients are also encouraged to bring some of their personal items such as glasses, hearing aids etc., but advised to refrain from bringing expensive jewellery, watches and other such valuables. We encourage you to come light and only with the most essential items to make your stay easy & hassle-free.

What must I expect during the hospitalization?

Hospitalization is a time for you to receive treatment, rest and recuperate. Patients often consider only the first part and overlook the remaining two. The treatment could be clinical, investigative and may involve a small procedure or major surgery (depending upon the case). The major part of the hospitalization stay will be allocated to the treatment part. However, a vital component of your hospital stay is also to be able to rest & recuperate. Allowing the body sufficient rest from everyday stress is vital to the treatment course.

Can the patients have a care-giver and receive visitors?

At BGS Gleneagles Global Hospitals, we encourage you to bring along one care-giver who is available with you at all times. This could be a close relative or family member or a personal friend. We understand that your health is important to your friends and loved ones and they would have the desire to visit you to know of your well-being. We allow visitors at designated hours, in a manner that is not disturbing to other patients. Visitors may not be allowed for highly critical cases and patients in intensive care.

What is the expected outcome of hospitalization?

The expected outcome of hospitalization can and should be discussed with your respective doctor prior to admission. Each patient could have a different threshold limit to be relieved from the hospital. It is important to note that the end of hospitalization is not the end of the treatment cycle. You may require subsequent visits, medication and consultation to complete the overall treatment and overcome your sickness. The end of hospitalization simply means that you no longer require constant monitoring and can rest at home or undertake daily activities.

Preparing for Surgery

For international patients, most of the surgeries undertaken are elective procedures and therefore allows them time for sufficient planning and preparation. A surgical intervention is often necessitated to help a patient overcome sickness and resume normal activities. We advise our international patients to be well-informed and well-prepared to ensure their visit is successful & worthy of the time and expenses. Preparation of surgery ought to involve the following,

Your Hospital Stay
  • Detailed discussions on the need for surgery and outcome
  • Securing necessary travel documentation
  • Undergoing medical investigations prior to travel
  • Insurance approval and/or arrangement of funds for surgery

A patient must also be mentally ready to undergo an elective surgery. In most cases, the consent & approval of the immediate family is also necessary. There must be a thorough discussion with doctors, counsellors and staff to aid this process of preparation.

FAQs

Why is a surgery necessitated?

The need for surgical intervention differs from case-to-case. However, in most cases the fundamental principal is that the condition requires excision, suturing, grafting, bypassing and other such procedures – which constitute a surgery. Doctors will opt for a surgical intervention if it is likely to quicken recovery, improve chances of recovery and help the patient have a better chance of overcoming the disease.

Who will perform the surgery?

The surgeon expected to perform your surgery will have a detailed conversation with you on the need and process of the surgery. The surgeon will be assisted by a team of specialized nurses, paramedics and other specialists. Each surgery will have a specialist surgeon who heads the operation, assisted by other specialists based on requirements. An anesthetist will monitor your conscious levels and administer necessary pain medication.

What will happen on the day of surgery?

On the day of the surgery a patient is moved to a pre-operation area and prepped for surgery. This includes changing into sterile surgical robes, intubation (if necessary) and final investigations. Patients may be asked to refrain from consuming food from the midnight on the day of the surgery. Any other precautions will be communicated well ahead of time.

Unexpected changes in the surgical schedule may happen sometimes. This may lead to change in your surgery timing on the day of surgery. Your family members, friends will be asked to wait in the surgical waiting room or the hospital lobby during your surgery. After being shifted in the operating room by the nurse, several monitors will be applied to monitor heart rate and rhythm. Three small sticky patches would be placed on your chest and an automatic blood pressure cuff will be placed on the arm.

Things to Remember Before Surgery

  • Do not eat, drink (not even water) after midnight the day before your surgery. If you have been instructed to take important medications, take no more than two tablespoons of water and no later than two hours before surgery. If you eat or drink after midnight, your surgery may be delayed or will be cancelled.
  • Do not wear hairpins, watches, contact lenses, or removable jewellery. If you wear a wig please remove.
  • You may be asked to remove dentures and other non-permanent items including undergarments before surgery.
  • If you are admitted to the hospital after your surgery, you may want to bring pyjamas or nightgown, slippers, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant and other personal toiletries, etc.

What kind of anesthetic will I be given?

The choice of pain-relievers and anaesthesia is decided based on the nature of surgery, patient’s condition and the recovery options post-surgery. The patient or the caregivers will be informed of the same their consent recorded. For critical surgeries general anaesthesia is preferred while local anaesthesia is the option for smaller, more localized procedures. For surgeries wherein a larger area is to be operated but a general anaesthesia is either unviable for difficult a spinal anaesthesia will be given.

How long does it take to recover from surgery?

Typically, an overnight stay in the post-surgical intensive care allows a patient to recover sufficiently from the surgery. With anaesthesia waning the patient may experience mild grogginess, pain etc. This is completely normal.

Following surgery, you will be taken to a recovery room where you will receive continuous care by a trained nurse. Your vital signs will be regularly monitored along with any dressing that was applied after surgery. You may experience dry mouth, a sore throat, chills and blurred vision. If you experience pain or discomfort in the area of your surgery, do not hesitate to ask for pain medication. Be sure to report your pain. Doctors will monitor the vitals and move the patient to an intensive care, normal ward or room as necessary.

Your family members/friends should be in the waiting room before the end of your surgery time so that the surgeon can speak to them. If they need to leave, it is best to do so at the beginning of your surgery to avoid missing the surgeon at the completion of your surgery. Your surgeon will let your family/friend know how you are doing and answer questions, letting them know whether you require hospitalization or whether you will be discharged home.
